Remigijus Morkevičius Wiki

Morkevicius comes from kickboxing and Muay Thai backgrounds and is best known for his powerful knees from the clinch. He fought for ZST, K-1 Hero's, and Shooto Lithuania. He holds notable victories over Masahiro Oishi and Hideo Tokoro.

Born and raised in the hard knocks city of Kaunas, Lithuania - he was raised by his Grandmother. He began in martial arts through Kickboxing, primarily as means for him to vent his energies and stay out of trouble. He became a national Kickboxing and Muay Thai champion in Lithuania before cross competing in MMA.

Upon defeating Darius Baliulis at a local MMA event, he would be invited to compete for japanese staple - 'ZST'. He immediately made an impact going 4-0 with a sub and 3 KO's via knees, earning him a spot in the inaugural ZST Grand Prix. He would breeze through the first 2 rounds of the tournament before suffering his first loss in the semifinals to eventual champion Marcus Aurelio. He also took part in the ZST Grand Prix 2, which he won by defeating Oishi by KO. He has also taken part in ZST's unique tag team MMA matches, teaming up with Mindaugas Stankas to take on Takumi Yano and Masakazu Imanari.

After years juggling storied Kickboxing and MMA careers he would go 2 - 2 in the 'K1/HERO'S' promotion, before closing out his MMA venture with a win at ZST 9 in 2006, and posting a 10 - 3 overall record in the promotion - the best record of any foreign athlete in ZST to this day.

After building some foundational success in MMA, he competed in the 'K1-Kickboxing' promotion. Upon joining he would go 4 - 0 defeating prospects Yasuhiro Kazuya ( via decision ) and Shingo Garyu ( via ko 'flying knee ) at home in Japan - Su-Hwan Lee ( via ko 'left hook ) at home in Korea, and then German-Dennis Schneidmiller ( via decision ) in his native Lithuania. ( all under the 'K1' banner. )

After this initial success he received a significant step up in competition taking on one of K1's poster boys in Masato, in 2006 and then dangerous Brazilian slugger and 'Team Chute Boxe' rep Andre Dida, in 2008. Morkevičius would suffer emphatic losses in both, however both bouts are still celebrated in many highlight reels today, and are remembered as high-octane and action packed spectacles.

Following these losses he would go 4 - 0 - 1 over the next 6 years against opponents from Poland, Germany and Spain - these opponents holding a combined record of 41 - 10 - 4. He retired from active competition in 2014, with a combined Kickboxing / Muay Thai record of 60 - 8 - 1,  stretching back to his early teens.

On 21st December 2016, Morkevičius was shot multiple times upon leaving his apartment in Kaunas, being pronounced dead at the scene. While the investigation is still pending - it is known that the armed assailant was waiting in his vehicle by the entrance of the apartment complex, catching him off guard. He is survived by his wife and 3 children, with his wife currently expecting their 4th child. He will be remembered as an MMA and combat-sport pioneer and trailblazer in Lithuania, helping lay the early foundation for MMA and Kickboxing in the humble Baltic-nation. He will also be remembered as someone who came from difficult circumstances - but who managed to forge something of himself through sport and martial arts exhibition. His style will be remembered as a highly explosive, entertaining, and enthralling one - a fighter who was "never in a boring fight"... While few outside of loved ones would proclaim him a saint - surely his, is a life taken too soon.
